David’s Story: A participant case study from 2023
David participates in Bright Shadow’s Whitstable Zest group.
When asked what a typical day for him is like, David said there really is no typical day for him. On days without a Zest session, he starts by seeing his granddaughter off to school. He has his tablets, his breakfast and gets on with his day. Some days are good and others are more difficult. On a good day, he goes curling or plays football to keep himself busy. Difficult days for him are sad anniversary days.
Zest days are different. “I have a lay in until 9am. I take my backpack, get lunch from Tesco and head to the train. I let Steve, one of the Zest Coordinators, know which coach I am on, we meet up and walk to the workshop together. After the session, I feel brighter walking back to the train. I’m bouncing along thinking about the things we’ve done and what I’ve been able to accomplish.”
He likes the social time Zest session bring to his days. “I would love Zest to have a social subgroup or a supper club.” David says, “it’s important to accomplish something every day.”

A’s Story: Our Whitstable Zest Coordinator shares a case study from 2022
A started Zest late last year. She lives alone and is housebound most of the time. Although she was made welcome, she was initially unsure if the Zest group was for her. As A got to know other participants, and with encouragement and support from myself and others, she gradually found the confidence to take part in the various activities. The day before each session, I telephone A for a chat and to confirm her attendance in order to support arrangements for transport to and from the venue. Due to her memory problems I speak to her again on the morning of the session. This, and her attendance at Zest, helps to alleviate some of her isolation and contributes to her wellbeing.
Other than coming to Zest, A rarely leaves her house. She says that it has given her the opportunity to try new things and a chance to enjoy the company of others. It gives her something to think about and above all look forward to each week.
After one session A said “I never thought I would be playing the drums at my age!”
What participants at Zest Whitstable had to say:
“I enjoy the company of the group. When I am struggling with tasks, there is always someone ready to help me out. We do some good things. I look forward to it every week.”

“I never thought I would be able to do anything like this… it’s amazing what we have created.”
Whitstable Zest Participant, 2022
“Having memory problems, Zest has helped me maintain some of my independence and confidence. I love all the activities that we do and being introduced to new things. It has encouraged me to do things for myself.”
